Language Programs

CICEL has designed educational language programs for people interested in learning in depth about Mexican society, life and culture. This program provides the opportunity to meet and share experiences with groups who work in connection with CICEL.

Special programs are designed according to the time and needs of individuals and interested groups.

Spanish Courses

CICEL has established an alliance with Spanish professionals and other local Spanish schools among them CAIA and MESOAMERICA to offer the opportunity to engage in language studies while learning about Mexican traditions and culture. CICEL and these educational centers understand the importance of achieving and mastering abilities of communication with clients whose first language is not Spanish. For this reason we have made a commitment to offer one of the best Spanish programs, with the best-trained instructors in this area of work, for the participant who would like to master his or her communication skills.

CICEL offers Spanish programs that mainly focus on social work, clinical psychotherapy, nursing, literature, and the history of Mexico. These programs require a proficiency of at least an intermediate level. CICEL provides a placement test one day prior to the beginning of the course for students with existing knowledge of Spanish to ensure the appropriate level of instruction

Spanish with Emphasis in Nursing.

This program is designed in collaboration with an experienced community nurse, a health community worker, and an experienced Spanish instructor. The course focuses on practical expressions and dialogues as well as the reviewing of health information materials that apply to the area of health education and the practice of nursing. Although grammatical structures are reviewed, we also emphasize the development of communication skills at all levels. The course also integrates visits to local clinical sites and interviews with diverse health workers, including nurses, health promoters, local healers, midwives, and rural doctors.

CICEL has also developed an extensive network of community health workers. Our main concern in the past has been to contribute towards the betterment of the health conditions in which our communities live.

Class dynamics may include: a game using Spanish terms and concepts and/or preparation of presentations that developed by the students with the assistance of a teacher, as well as instructors coordinating a conversation class that include topics related to health issues. Another activity may include the development of a sketch for an acting performance which will be performed at the end of classes with the participation of instructors. Other activities may include learning to sing traditional songs in Spanish.

Basic Spanish.

We also offer classes at this level. Classes are based in solid grammatical principles and real-life situations for learning and practicing Spanish. For these classes no more than four students are assigned per classroom, although we highly recommend private tutoring. Students enrolled in this program learn basic grammatical structures and, most importantly, acquire conversational skills. This course gives the students fluency in “survival Spanish.” Classes are taught in classrooms and outdoor sites such as in restaurants, at the main square, in the market, etc.

Spanish and Literature

This program is designed for students of intermediate and advanced levels. The purpose of the program is to offer participants possibilities to expand their knowledge and use of the language as well as throught Mexican and Latin American literature. The main goal is to guide students to develop the art of conversation utilizing literary materials that may alow them to widen their knowledge in culture, history, and Mexican and Latin American wisdom. Materials from famous writers are reviewed throughly. Authors reviewed might include, Juan Rulfo, Rosario Castellanos, Nelly Campobello, Guadalupe Loaesa, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez among others.

This class is taught partially in the classroom and partially in outdoor sites.
